Abstract: In 2024, the fifth IWASS took place in Krakow, Poland, ahead of to the 34th ESREL conference. IWASS 2024 was attended by thirty in-person and online participants from eleven countries and twenty-three organizations from academia, industry, and government.
As the fifth installment of IWASS, we aimed to reassess and reevaluate the state of autonomous system’s deployments: Are the expectations set five years ago about increased system efficiency and safety reasonable? What are the main unresolved issues that challenge the adoption of these technologies? Is a shift in research, industry and regulatory paradigms required to address these challenges, or are external – business and social – pressures the main forces behind the advances and setbacks of autonomous system deployments?

Abstract: IWASS 2023 took place on September 2nd and 3rd in Southampton, United Kingdom, and gathered 39 participants from 30 organizations from around the globe. In addition, a panel session at the European Safety and Reliability Conference (ESREL 2023) discussed the workshop's main conclusions and additional points with a larger audience.
This report provides a summary of IWASS 2023, including the presentations given by our invited speakers and an overview of the discussions held during the workshop and the panel at ESREL. These findings provide a strong foundation to correctly approach discussions regarding autonomous SRS, as well as a path toward the safe development and operation of autonomous systems for researchers, developers, and regulatory agencies.

Abstract: IWASS 2022 was held on August 28th in Dublin, Ireland, and gathered 30 participants from 20 organizations from around the globe. In addition, a panel session at the European Safety and Reliability Conference (ESREL 2022) discussed the workshop's main conclusions and additional points with a larger audience.
This report summarizes IWASS 2022 discussions. It provides an overview of the main points raised by a community of experts on the current status of autonomous systems SRS. It also outlines research directions for safer, more reliable and secure future autonomous systems.

The First International Workshop on Autonomous Systems Safety (IWASS) took place in Trondheim, Norway, from 11th to 13th of March 2019. The participation in the workshop was by invitation only and included 47 subject matter experts from Europe, Asia, Australia, and the U.S., working in both academia and industry.
The awareness on autonomous systems’ similarities is not a novelty in the field. Yet, to our knowledge, no event before IWASS had assembled experts on different autonomous systems with the purpose to discuss safety, reliability, and security (SRS).
These proceedings document the discussions and the main results from the workshop. It includes (i) an overview of the different applications of autonomous systems and its challenges concerning SRS; (ii) summaries of the discussions on key topics held at IWASS; and (iii) complementary papers from several participants.
