California High-Speed Rail Awards a Major Research Grant to the Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3) on Earthquake Fault Displacement Hazard Initiative
/The California High-Speed Rail, CA-HSR (https://www.hsr.ca.gov/) recently awarded a major research grant to UCLA on “Earthquake Fault Displacement Hazard Initiative.” The project is a multidisciplinary research effort to be undertaken by the Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3, https://www.risksciences.ucla.edu/nhr3), a multi-campus research center with headquarters at the Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.
This three-year research project will develop a database of earthquake fault displacement, probabilistic predictive models of fault displacement, and their engineering applications. “This multidisciplinary project is particularly important because it has broad application to all lifeline infrastructures extended facilities crossing, or in close proximity of, earthquake faults,” said Prof. Yousef Bozorgnia, Principal Investigator of the research project. “The CA High-Speed Rail is the largest infrastructure project in the US, and we are delighted to be an important player in ensuring its safety and resilience to natural hazards,” said Prof. Ali Mosleh, Director of the UCLA Garrick Risk Institute.
The various tasks of the overall initiative are co-sponsored by: CA High-Speed Rail, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, CA Energy Commission, CA Department of Transportation, and SoCalGas Company.
