The International Workshop for Autonomous System Safety (IWASS) 2023 is a joint effort by the B. John Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and the University of Stuttgart.

IWASS is an invitation-only event that gathers key experts in autonomous systems safety from academia, industry, and regulatory agencies. IWASS aims to identify common challenges related to safety, reliability, and security (SRS) of autonomous systems, covering autonomous maritime, marine, land vehicles, and aerospace systems, and to discuss and propose possible solutions for the identified challenges.

IWASS 2023 was held on September 2nd-3rd, 2023, in Southampton, United Kingdom.

We thank all the participants and organizers for the discussions this year.

IWASS 2023 Topic: Safety Cases and Autonomous Systems

How can autonomous systems’ development and operation benefit from a safety case? What are the advantages and limitations of safety cases? What should they include? Which guidelines are necessary for the industry and for legislation and regulators?

With the increasing use of safety cases for autonomous systems, these questions need science-based responses. This year, IWASS aims to discuss safety cases and produce a position paper by the Risk Sciences Community to respond to these and related questions.

IWASS 2023 discussions focused on addressing the challenges of providing thorough and credible safety assurance of complex systems as automation capabilities increase across multiple industries. In preparation for the workshop, a white paper was prepared to provide a common understanding of safety cases and their use in industry.

ESREL is the key annual event for meetings and knowledge exchange in the area of risk assessment, risk management, and optimization of the performance of socio-technological systems in Europe, and among the most important internationally.

An IWASS Panel featuring our discussions was held during ESREL 2023. We thank our panelists and participants who enriched the discussions, and we look forward to continuing them in the future.
